Today's post is by Mary Wooten, who serves as the Intern Director at Refuge for Women.
“God is Love.” I John 4:16 “Love never fails.” I Cor 13:8
These two statements are truths of God from His word. Over the past few weeks I’ve never personally experienced these truths more powerfully through the body of Christ surrounding the tragedy of June 26th. Having suffered great pain and loss, the Refuge for Women family experienced the love of Christ, and in all things God was given the glory. People from all over the nation prayed, others served in countless ways to communicate love and active concern. We are aware more than ever that “Love never fails.”
I would like to share one example of this love. On Sunday, June 29th, my husband, who ministers in campus ministry, stood before our church family and explained what had happened the previous Thursday night. He mentioned my having recently joined the Refuge in a part-time role as intern director, and the needs of the victims and families having travelled to UK hospital from out of state to be with their injured girls. I had been asked to prepare baskets with gift cards to help these families, so we took a collection after our worship assembly hoping that our families could help offset the cost for their families using cash on hand that day. I stood in the foyer overwhelmed by so many Christian friends who generously poured out their love, giving over $2000 that day. The basket I held was overflowing and my heart full of love for a community that cares when people suffer. The body of Christ moved that day and I am so thankful that in Him we see that when one child suffers, in this case five precious ladies, the whole body suffers with them. From the struggles of funeral expenses to gift cards on the long ride home God provided a small way to help communicate His love to families who are so very loved by Him.
I’m humbled by the response of our Christian family and at the same time so encouraged by many others in Christian communities who have shown love in action through this time of suffering. It is beautiful to see a community of believers working together to love as we have been loved and to show a hurting world the love of God that never fails.
Trusting this love, we move forward as the healing continues, so thankful for God’s provision and promises. He has deepened our love for each other and our resolve to continue the ministry at Refuge for Women in His strength and grace. To God be the glory in all things!
