Dear Supporters; A Letter of Thanks

Dear Supporters,

As we wrap up 2016 and move towards the New Year, we want to share with you some of the reasons why our guests are so thankful for Refuge For Women, and why our staff is so thankful for you.

Today I feel safe! I’m so thankful for this because for my entire life, I never knew what “safe” felt like, and being in a safe place has allowed me to learn to love, and accept love. When I came to Refuge For Women, the love was so overwhelming and hard to deny. I didn't understand it at first, but now I know that God’s love is flowing out of each and every person I meet through Refuge. The hardened places of my heart have softened, and I see the world through a new perspective. My past doesn’t control me today, and flashbacks don't leave me in fear or pain.

Being told that I had multiple personalities, and that I would have to take medications for the rest of my life to “cope,” left me feeling hopeless, and like a failure. I was told that I couldn’t be helped, yet when I arrived at Refuge, one of the main focuses of the program was on “trauma.” Facing these traumas has allowed me to heal in so many areas of my life, and I am no longer taking all the medications prescribed by doctors. I'm so thankful for the supporters of Refuge For Women, because without this place I wouldn’t be the person I am today. God has truly revealed himself to me, healing the many broken areas of my mind, and has done it here at Refuge.

My life before Refuge was miserable. I never knew where I would eat, sleep, or get my next high. For many years I lived with my abusers, as my body was sold for money, because I thought this was the best that life had to offer me. My mind was so warped, that I actually thought I wanted the life I was living.  Little did I know that there was a whole world of God fearing people, ready to love me back to life. Today I am so very grateful for stability. I’m grateful for a place where hunger and dirtiness are never a worry. My clothes are clean, but most importantly my body, my addictions, and my soul have been replaced by my heart for Jesus.

My identity was in everything but God. I chased after money, fame, men, popularity, and degrees. Yet though, everything I was chasing after left me feeling empty inside, and my addictions controlled my life. After coming to Refuge, I realized that all of the “identities” I built over the years was my escaping to and from, who I thought I was. I learned to put my identity in my creator! I learned that I am who God says I am! I learned that he loves me, and wants a relationship with me! For this, I am forever grateful!

Dear supporters,

I have been in awe over the past few months witnessing the endless support and love we have received from our donors and supporters.  Opening a new house takes a lot of work, but so many donors and volunteers helped and gave without hesitation!  Incredible is the word that comes to my mind.  I don't think our donors realize the impact they have on the women and staff.  Our ladies have heat, a bed to sleep in, food and so much more than they have ever had in the past.  We are able to provide them a safe and comfortable place to call home and that is crucial to their healing.  None of that would be possible without you, our supporters.

Our supporters have some of the biggest and most selfless hearts.  It is an absolute blessing to be able to see, first hand, the fruit of what you give.  I am constantly blown away by the support Refuge receives! Our God is so good and he knows just what we need.  He has truly blessed us with amazing people and we are all one big family working together to serve these women and build his kingdom ever bigger!  Our supporters rock, and this holiday season I hope you are able to grasp the eternal impact you have on victims of sexual trafficking and exploitation.  The impact is not only lifelong, it is eternal.

So beyond grateful and touched,

Kate Witten
