The journey to how we got to where we are with our 2nd Refuge house in Kentucky just blows my mind! I remember speaking out at sharing events all over Central Kentucky beginning a couple years ago about having a waiting list of women seeking healing and the need of a 2nd house. We had been praying about God’s timing for the 2nd house for months and believed it was time! This is how you know GOD IS IN IT!
Shortly after we got confirmation, I was sharing at a small church in May of 2012 in a small rural town and heard God say be courageous and speak out the need for a second house! Size doesn’t matter… Within months this church contacted me and shared that they believed they were to contribute a large donation toward the 2nd Refuge house. The leaders of the church were honest and told me not to get my hopes up because it would take a miracle. The elders would need to vote, the “parent” church in Lexington would need to approve and finally the congregation would need to pass this by a 51% majority vote. Good thing I believe in miracles! All votes passed and a very generous donation of $50,000 was given to us toward the renovation of our second house. Now all we needed was a house!!
Never fear. After God connected my path via a mutual friend, and telling our “story” to many families, God put me in front of a beautiful couple in the same county as the church who donated the money. They had a 113 year old farm house not being used and after hearing about our ministry, agreed to pray about letting us use it. This amazing couple prayed and then the beginning of October 2012 called back saying God told them they are to donate their farm house to the Refuge and that they want to be involved in any way they can to serve the guests.
A fundraiser event was held in the small rural county with over 100 people in attendance and raised over $10,000 to help with the renovation of the house! A local General Contractor is led by God to oversee the project with a “mission mind” and spends many weekends and hours at the house!
Renovation began with a BOOM as a group of 40 volunteers demolished the back ½ of the old house in April of 2013 and took the house down to the wood walls in only 3 days. For me this was incredibly symbolic of the lives of the women we would soon be serving there. God gave me the following scriptures; 1) DEMOLISH - “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world (flesh). On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” (2 Corinthians 10:4) God will soon demolish the enemy’s lies, tricks and schemes that hold these women in bondage. 2) REBUILD & RESTORE – “They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.” (Isaiah 61:4) The lives of the women who will come live in this house seek healing and a new beginning. Their lives and the generations that come after them will be forever changed! Lives and families restored, reconciled and rebuilt all for the glory of the Lord. 3) LOVE – The foundation of the Refuge for Women ministry is “Love, not judged”. The women we serve will know they are loved and they will come to know and understand the power of love! “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails!” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
The women in our program, no matter how long their stay, will know they are loved!
Since beginning renovation, there has been an outpouring of support for this second house! A local church’s men’s group built 8 stackable beds and their women’s group donated new bedding for each bed, furniture has been donated to furnish the house, local dentists offer their services free to our guests, local counselors offer services at no cost to our guests, a roofing company hears our story and donates the roof free, a hardwood flooring company sees an interview on WKYT with one of our graduates and contacts us saying God told them to install hardwood floors in the house at no cost to us, many contractors offer their services at cost or free. There have been hundreds of volunteers working on the house renovation every weekend! We have been blown away by the generosity and the downpour of countless blessings that we have seen! How do we know God is in the ministry expansion? None of this could possibly be done by mankind! God’s hand is upon this ministry and the expansion! He wants these women healthy, healed and whole and we are so grateful that He’s using the Refuge for Women to do this!
Jesus said: “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” in Matthew 9:28.
Yes Lord, we believe!
